Buying Used Trucks For Ghana

Ghana has the tightest age limit of the markets we serve, and from October 2026 the conformity check happens before the truck leaves China rather than after it arrives. Read this before you shortlist a unit.

The Certificate of Conformity — the part that catches people

From 1 October 2026 the Ghana Standards Authority enforces pre-export verification of conformity on imported used vehicles. The inspection has to be completed in the exporting country by a GSA-approved third-party body, and the resulting Certificate of Conformity is what allows the vehicle to be cleared at Tema. Without it the vehicle cannot enter. This means the conformity cost and lead time now sit before shipment. Build both into your landed cost calculation, not after it.

What sells in Ghana

HOWO dominates. Chinese brands account for the large majority of tipper imports and HOWO leads that group by a wide margin, with parts stocked in Accra, Kumasi and Tema and mechanics familiar with the engine family. Demand is running on two engines at once: a national road programme with thousands of kilometres under construction, and a mining sector expanding across gold, bauxite, lithium and manganese concessions.

Configurations buyers are sourcing

  • 371 and 380 horsepower 6x4 tippers for road construction and quarry work
  • 8x4 tippers with 20 to 25 cubic metre bodies for in-pit ore and overburden haulage
  • 375 and 420 horsepower 6x4 tractor units for mine-to-port haulage and plant mobilisation
  • Water bowsers and fuel tankers for dust suppression and remote site supply

A note on Shacman in Ghana

Shacman has a solid position in East Africa but its distribution in West Africa is significantly thinner, and Ghana is a good example. Parts and mechanic familiarity lag well behind HOWO. If you are considering an F3000 or X3000 for Ghana, satisfy yourself on parts support before you commit, because that is the variable that decides whether the truck keeps earning.

TANAN does not guarantee customs clearance or import approval in Ghana, and we do not guarantee that a vehicle will pass a GS 4510 conformity inspection. Age and condition limits are set by the Ghana Standards Authority. Confirm current requirements and the approved inspection bodies with the GSA or your clearing agent before purchase. Rules and enforcement dates change without notice. Ghana's primary clearance port for vehicles is Tema, with Takoradi serving the western region.
